Painted en plein air from the hill above Birkenhead Point, this work captures the suspended quiet before sunrise. The sun had not yet lifted over the ridge, leaving the harbour in muted tones of mauve, ochre, and softened blue. The headland curves gently into still water, its trees held in silhouette against a sky preparing for light. Working in the cool hush of early morning, I focused on the subtle shifts in value rather than colour, allowing form and atmosphere to lead. The painting reflects anticipation, that fleeting interval when land and water wait, poised for the day to begin.
